1) Ability

a. Tom is strong. He can lift that heavy box.

2) Possibility

a. You can buy a hammer at the hardware store.

3) Permission

a. When you finish the test, you can leave. -informal

When you finish the test, you may leave. -formal

1) can ability를 의미할 경우: 대체사용 가능.

a. My father is over 90, but he can still drive a car.

b. My father is over 90, but he is still able to drive a car.

2) can possibility를 의미할 경우: 대체사용 불가.

a. Exercising alone can be boring.

b. *Exercising alone is able to be boring.

a. This word can have several different meanings.

b.* This word is able to have several different meanings.

a. Even expert drivers can make mistakes.

b. *Even expert drivers are able to make mistakes.

3) can't = inability

a. She can't speak French.

b. She is unable to speak French.

can't = impossibility

a. She can't be French - she must be Italian.

b. *She is unable to be French - she must be Italian.

4) 과거형 could: ability/possibility

a. He could play the violin when he was seven.

실제로 과거의 일을 나타내는 직설법 의 과거

b. Sam could be on his way now. (= may/might)

불확실한 가능성을 나타내는 가정법의 과거
